🍰 Light-Hearted Bites At 'Light On The Sugar' Bakery
“Dessert isn’t just about sweetness; it’s about flavor,” says Yixi Qui, owner of Light On The Sugar Bakery. Yixi, alongside his wife, Wen Qui, developed a love for puff pastries and coffee through traveling around the world. Their new, breezy pastry concept is tucked in Aloma, redefining desserts by focusing on flavor instead of sweetness.
“Our café captures the concept of light,” clarifies Wen, who designed the interior and hand-drew the bakery’s logo. The minimalist aesthetic of the café provides a bright ambiance, pronounced by the welcoming vibes of the plant decor.
The café works with an amazing French Pastry Chef who rotates the menu items. Though the types of pastries change week-to-week, one thing is consistent: the adorable presentation! Your selections are served on a wooden board with disposable wooden utensils. Look at all these light bites:
🥐 Puff Pastry
This pastry is satisfyingly fluffy, with a generous amount of cream tucked inside. Though the cream is abundant, it’s not overwhelming, as it holds an airy texture and natural flavor. Selections include strawberry, black sesame, and matcha. These flavors are classic Asian dessert tastes, delivered with French-influenced pastries. The bakery is looking to incorporate ice cream into the puff pastries in the future!
🍵 Tea Drink
Their tea menu includes refreshing flavors, such as Lavender Lemonade, which incorporates freshly-squeezed ingredients and lavender-based syrup. The floating lavender seeds are an indicator of freshness! The layered Matcha Tea is parallel, utilizing matcha bits that float to the bottom of the cup. The matcha was grown in Japan and holds the perfect balance: not too bitter, but not too sweet.
🍮 Panna Cotta
The cream in their panna cotta holds a pudding-like thickness with refreshing flavor from natural ingredients. The flavors include mango and lychee, which feature pure fruit purées mixed with milk, heavy cream, and gelatin. The use of purée instead of syrup makes all the difference, as the flavors were simple and light.
🥧 Dessert Choices
This bakery offers spot-on croissants, which take 3 days to make. The honeycomb layering of the pastry offers an airy consistency. The cake rolls also feature classic Asian dessert flavors, such as black sesame and matcha. The lemon tart offered the kick of citrus flavor without overbearing the smooth texture of the filling.
There aren’t any pop-out pictures or television screens, offering simplicity to prevent people from misunderstanding what the bakery is about. It’s a perfect coffee date spot for disconnecting from technology and connecting with each other. The airiness of their pastries is a reminder that sometimes less is more!
“You can eat desserts here without feeling guilty because our food isn’t overpowered with sugar,” reiterates Wen, “We try to keep it natural, clean, and simple!”
